SUSTAINABLE BUILDING: WHAT IS IT, AND WHAT ARE LEADING EXAMPLES IN EUROPE?
Sponsored by Consulate General of the Netherlands
Speaker:
Ronald Rovers - Sustainable Building Resource Centre
In the end, its about constructing building and houses. In a green or sustainable way. But what is that? What exactly do we want to establish, overlooking the impacts of our life style and the world’s resource situation?
And how do we perform there? And more specific: What is happening in Europe? The presentation will show the latest trends and achievements in Europe, and illustrate these with buildings recently established, regular as well as demonstration projects. Buildings that achieve “high performance” ( and what is it?) as well as 0- energy or even energy (or materials) producing buildings. In fact examples of how everything should be constructed, given the global transition we need to establish.

MALMO, SWEDEN - Green City of the Future
Speaker:
Johanna Ekne - Environmental Department - City of Malmo
Director, City Planning
Malmo, Sweden
In 2001, Malmö began the reclamation of its Västra Hamnen (Western Harbour) brownfield into the world-leading BO01 mixed-use development. This clean, green 25 hectare (of an eventual 160 ha) pedestrian/cyclist-centred project generates 100% of its own energy from renewable sources, uses storm water as a design feature and integrates heritage industrial buildings. It is home to Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso, a spectacular twisting skyscraper which quickly became Malmö's new landmark.
Speaker:
Chris Rickett - Toronto and Region Conservation
"Partners in Project Green: a Pearson Eco-Business Zone" aims to develop North America's largest eco-business zone on 12,000+ hectares of land surrounding Pearson International Airport where waste becomes a resource, green fleets and buildings operate and the eco-system is enhanced.

VANCOUVER OLYMPIC VILLAGE
Speaker:
Roger Bayley, P. Eng.
This presentation will address the growing concern of climate change and the impact of the building and construction industry on greenhouse gas emissions, resource use and waste. The discussion will focus on the design and construction of Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Village. The Village comprises 1.4 million square feet of commercial and residential development in 15-20 buildings including 1,100 residential units.

CONCURRENT SESSION - 2B - Design for Disassembly and Adaptability in Buildings
Speakers:
Vera Straka - Associate Professor, Ryerson University
Vince Catalli - Sustainability Consultant
The current rating systems for assessment of green buildings promote reuse of existing buildings and their components to a limited extent. They do not make building rehabilitation and addition significantly advantageous over new construction. As well, issues related to the future of new construction, its adaptive reuse or deconstruction are not considered at all. With the increase in demand for sustainability in the built environment and efficient use of resources there is a need to look forward and address the future of buildings which are being designed now. What a designer, builder or a developer can do today for a more sustainable future will be the subject of this presentation.
Objectives of CSA Guideline Z782-06
Basic concepts and framework
Design for adaptability principles
Design for disassembly principles
Case studies of adaptability of buildings Case studies of disassembly of buildings
The potential of designing for tomorrow today will be explored. Case studies will demonstrate current experience with disassembly and adaptive reuse of existing buildings that were likely designed without any consideration of their future beyond a common 30 year life span.

Seeing the Forest and the Trees
The role that timber plays in shaping building projects and inspiring sustainable design solutions will be discussed. The profile and influence of five forests from across Canada will be considered. The specific aspects and challenges of each location have served to generate buildings that are integrated with the environment.
Each wood building solution is also presented as a learning opportunity. The perspectives of those that live, work and play in buildings featuring timber structure, interior wood finishing, millwork detailing and furnishings will also be presented. The connection of environmental source – the Forest – to individual project solution – the Tree - provides inspiration for future projects in the community that celebrate wood as integral to sustainable buildings.
